Tokyo Convenience Stores: Your 24-Hour Travel Tool

How tourists can use Tokyo convenience stores for meals, ATMs, tickets, toiletries, luggage supplies and emergency basics.

Tokyo convenience stores are not just places to buy snacks. For travelers, they are 24-hour support centers hiding in plain sight. Seven-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart and other chains can solve small problems before they become big ones. Learning how to use them well will make your Tokyo trip easier, cheaper and more comfortable.

Food is the obvious advantage. You can buy rice balls, sandwiches, salads, fried chicken, noodles, desserts, coffee and seasonal drinks at almost any hour. Staff can usually heat prepared meals for you. For arrival day, late nights or early departures, convenience stores remove the pressure of finding a restaurant. They are also useful for breakfast if your hotel charges too much or opens too late.

ATMs are another major reason tourists rely on convenience stores. Many international cards work at convenience-store ATMs, especially in large chains, though fees and card compatibility vary. Withdraw modest amounts rather than carrying too much cash. Keep receipts until you confirm your bank record.

Convenience stores also help with daily logistics. You can buy umbrellas, masks, tissues, basic medicine, charging cables, socks, toiletries, notebooks, tape, luggage tags and small towels. In summer, cooling wipes and bottled drinks can rescue a long sightseeing day. In winter, hot drinks and heat packs are easy comfort items.

The payment process is efficient. Place items on the counter, follow the screen or staff instruction, and pay by cash, card or supported digital method. If you do not need a bag, a small gesture or “no bag” is usually understood. Eat purchased food back at your hotel or in an appropriate place; walking while eating is less common in many Tokyo neighborhoods, and trash bins can be hard to find.

Convenience stores are also excellent for travelers with unpredictable schedules. Missed breakfast? Convenience store. Sudden rain? Convenience store. Need yen? Convenience store. Too tired for dinner? Convenience store. Tokyo has world-class restaurants, but its convenience stores are what keep tourists functioning smoothly between the big plans.
