How to Use IC Cards in Tokyo: Suica, PASMO and Tourist Basics

Learn how Tokyo IC cards work, where to use them, how to charge them and why they make travel easier for visitors.

An IC card is one of the simplest tools for moving around Tokyo. Instead of buying a paper ticket for each train or bus ride, you tap in, tap out and let the system calculate the fare. For most visitors, this removes a major source of daily friction. The card is not only for trains. It can often be used at buses, vending machines, convenience stores, station lockers and some restaurants.

The most familiar Tokyo IC cards are Suica and PASMO. In practical tourist use, they work almost the same across most Tokyo transport. Travelers with compatible smartphones may be able to add a digital card to a mobile wallet, which is especially convenient because you can top up without standing at a machine. Physical tourist cards may be available at airports or major stations depending on supply, so check current availability before relying on one.

Using an IC card is straightforward. At a train gate, tap the card or phone on the reader and walk through when the gate opens. At your destination, tap again to exit. If your balance is too low, use a fare adjustment machine or recharge before leaving. For buses, follow the local boarding system. In Tokyo, many buses use flat fares, but some routes elsewhere in Japan work differently.

Charge your card with smaller amounts at first. A balance of a few thousand yen is enough for regular city travel, snacks and small purchases. Keep some cash because not every recharge machine accepts foreign cards. If you use a mobile IC card, make sure your phone battery does not die before you reach your hotel.

The biggest advantage is confidence. Tokyo has many train companies, lines and fare structures. An IC card lets you focus on the route rather than the ticket price. For tourists planning busy days, it is a small setup step that saves time every morning, every transfer and every evening return.
